A long-use, 10-hour KNB-15A battery option is also available and the sturdy belt-clip mounts directly to the body chassis.

Brass Reinforced Antenna Port
The sealed heavy-duty "SMA" antenna connector and high-gain durable antenna of the FreeTalk XL® provide excellent strength for optimum range.

Time-Out Timer
When the continuous transmit limit of 3 minutes is reached, the time-out timer automatically switches the FreeTalk XL® to receive operation. This limits per transmission talk time of each unit to help reduce channel congestion and conserve battery power.

(*1)The FreeTalk XL® comes pre-programmed with 15 FCC GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) frequencies for convenience, however, an FCC license is required for operation (see the FreeTalk(TM) instruction manual for frequencies and easy licensing information). The GMRS emergency channel (channel 10) should only be used for soliciting/rendering traveler aid or for emergency communications for immediate protection of life or property. TK-278/378

.

VHF: 136 ~ 150 MHz/150 ~ 174 MHz
UHF: 400 ~ 420 MHz/450 ~ 470 MHz

The TK-278/378 "multi-feature" handhelds from Kenwood will insure your group is well connected with features like 32-channel memory capacity, built-in QT & DTMF signaling and convenient dialing functions.

Features at a glance:

  • Economical yet full-featured
  • Large LCD display
  • 32-channel capacity
  • Multiple scanning options
  • Easy channel management
  • Built-in QT and DTMF signaling

TK-278/378 in detail:

Large LCD display provides clear legibility under any lighting conditions from bright sunshine to the dark of night (backlight on). It also displays various icons showing current operating status.

Tough, lightweight and compact construction means the TK-278/378 will provide long-lasting field life. And because they meet U.S. MIL-STD 810 C/D/E standards covering shock, vibration, humidity, dust, and rain, they will perform in even the toughest conditions.

The vertical layered design, with the battery pack forming the entire back of the unit and the transceiver components forming the front, is a fresh departure from the conventional stacked design. This approach results in a stronger chassis and a single PCB, and improves the overall styling and appearance of the radio.

32-channel capacity (semi-duplex) ensures plenty of room for applications today and tomorrow. And once programmed, users simply select channels with the convenient rotary encoder located on the top of the radio.

Busy channel lockout further improves channel management by preventing transmit if another talk group is already on the air.

A time-out timer limits the transmission time of the radio. Settings include the time allowed for continuous transmit, the period before the TOT alarm sounds, and the retransmit prohibit period and associated time allowed for temporary receive. These help guard against misuse or accidental key-ups.

Built-in QT signaling segregates talk groups so users only hear traffic from other co-channel users in their own group. Selectable QT means the user can temporarily change the QT frequency set for each channel.

DTMF signaling adds another dimension to paging with 3- to 10-digit DTMF code combinations available. 3-digit ID plus 1-digit group code Sel Call, and a 1- to 5-digit status code are also supported, as is DTMF group calling.

Two types of ANI -- PTT ID and DIAL ID -- send connect and disconnect ID information. PTT ID is activated by the PTT, and DIAL ID by the dial keys. It is also possible to individually set PTT ID as on or off for each channel.

Monitor/Squelch OFF defeats the preset signaling mode, or allows the squelch to be opened manually for receiving weak signals.

Call alert lets you know you were called with DTMF signaling.

DTMF transpond transmits a code telling the caller that your radio received their DTMF paging signal.

Signaling AND/OR logic works when using combinations of signaling systems. Squelch is opened when either one, or all, signal requirements are met, depending on your settings.

Convenient dialing functions include Manual Dial, Auto-Dial, Redial and Store & Send (display shows the input DTMF code before it is sent).

The power saver feature automatically places the receiver in a "sleep" mode for short intervals during periods of inactivity.

Low battery alert causes the red TX LED to flash a warning when voltage drops below threshold.

Other Features:

The dial key also functions as a D/A key, allowing users to add or delete scan channels at any time to customize the scan list for temporary assignments or to avoid nuisance traffic.
The talk around key switches the radio to simplex mode (non-repeater) for close-in communications.
  • Priority scan
  • 500 mW speaker audio output
  • Built-in speaker mic jack
  • Space for optional signaling boards
  • AUX switch turns its function on and off.

Features at a glance:

  • Max. 8-channel Capacity
  • Built-in 2-tone Decoder
  • Built-in 2-tone Encoder
  • DTMF Transpond
  • Signaling AND/OR Logic
  • Wide/Narrow Channel Bandwidth Per Channel (Multi-mode)
  • Wideband Design

TK-762G/862G in detail:

Max. 8-channel Capacity
8-channel capacity ensures plenty of room for applications today and tomorrow. Once programmed, users simply select the appropriate channel. Flexible channel group size permits organizing channels into required regional or special-use groupings.

Built-in 2-tone Decoder
The decoder offers a 2-tone paging pair that can be assigned to any channel (Individual Call: A, B or C tones paired in any combination; Group Call: Long A, Long B or Long C). Incoming messages are signaled via both audible and visible alerts while call alert provides two distinct short beep tone sequences to differentiate between individual and group calls. Transpond can be enabled to transmit an acknowledgement tone (long beep) that a page was received.

Built-in 2-tone Encoder
The TK-762G/862G mobile units are equipped with 2-tone encoding/decoding capability. When encoding or decoding transceiver communications, a specific code is available for each function.

DTMF Transpond Upon a valid DTMF paging decode, DTMF Transpond can transmit an acknowledgement code (auto dial memory No. 1) as a receipt of page. Transpond can be enabled to transmit a long beep tone as recognition that a page has been received.

Signaling AND/OR Logic
Depending on the application, DTMF or 2-tone paging decode can be set to one of two squelch types. "OR" is set for receiving all voice traffic with audio muted only by the programmed QT/DQT tone/codes (radio will alert when a valid decode of a page is received). "AND" is set for muting the radio until both the programmed QT/DQT and a valid DTMF page is decoded.

Wide/narrow Channel Bandwidth Per Channel (Multi-mode)
The TK-762G and TK-862G mobiles are programmable wide/narrow channel spacing* on a per channel basis (TK-762G: 25 (30) kHz wide/12.5 (15) kHz narrow; TK-862G: 25 kHz wide/12.5 kHz narrow). The enhanced synthesizer channel step programmability accommodates channel allocations now and in the future.

*Both models operate with no less than 25 kHz wide and 12.5 kHz narrow channel bandwidth.

Wideband Design
Coverage is provided across the most common VHF & UHF bands (see specifications). VHF: 148 ~ 174 MHz and 136 ~ 162 MHz; UHF: 450 ~ 490 MHz.
